KOMO News reports Deputy Daniel McCartney responded to a 911 call and dispatchers could hear screaming. Nearby, they discovered the fatally wounded deputy.
Pierce County Sheriff's Deputy Daniel Alexander McCartney was shot and killed during a foot chase late Sunday as he responded to a home invasion in the Frederickson area, about 45 miles south of Seattle.
When deputies arrived, a suspect fled and one of the deputies pursued him. The second suspected burglar police are hunting was described as tall and thin with curly dark hair in a ponytail and "pock marks" on the right side of his face. A male suspect was found dead at the scene. He was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and a black beanie.
The Pierce County Sheriff's Department identified the deputy as Daniel McCartney, 34. That road and others - 176th Street East, 38th Avenue East and Canyon Road East - were closed to form a perimeter for the search.
Drivers were asked to avoid the area and residents were asked to stay inside their homes.
All schools in the Bethel School District, have been closed for the day as a precaution. The injured deputy was transported in critical condition to Saint Joseph's Hospital in Tacoma where he later died.
"Early this morning Pierce County lost one of their finest in the line of duty". He was as an electronics technician 2nd class (E-5).
McCartney served on the USS Abraham Lincoln from February 25, 2004, through October 6, 2008.
Much of the Yelm community mourns the passing of McCartney as he was an active member and coach at CrossFit in Yelm. He leaves behind a wife and three sons. Deputy McCartney was a Navy veteran and served the department for three years. Daniel McCartney was an fantastic human! "Our hearts are breaking with all of you during this time".
