Following a meeting with managing director Lee Charnley and head of safeguarding Steve Swinyard, a decision has now been taken for the legendary Newcastle and England striker to spend some time away from St James' Park.

Beardsley made more than 300 appearances for his home-town club in two spells during a glittering career which also took him to Manchester United, Liverpool, Everton and Manchester City.

The move was confirmed in a statement issued by the Magpies on Tuesday afternoon. Allegations of unfair treatment have been made, which are now being investigated.

Winger Yasin Ben El-Mhan, 22, has made a formal complaint to the club over Beardsley alleged bullying of the player and was backed up by a number of statements from other players.

As reported by the Dailymail, Beardsley has allegedly made racist comments to one of his players during a trip to Go Ape, an outdoor adventure company which runs Tree Top Adventures, Forest Segways, Tree Top Junior Adventures and Zip Trekking Adventures.

Peter Beardsley says he "categorically denies" allegations of bullying and racism.

Newcastle United's Peter Beardsley has taken an "agreed period of leave" as the club investigates allegations of bullying by the under-23 coach.

A statement made by the 56-year-old's lawyers read: "Peter Beardsley is aware of inaccurate media reports which result from unauthorised leaks". It is hoped the investigation will conclude quickly.
