"A prosperous, stable Iran is beneficial to all", Matthew Rycroft said on Friday, January 5, addressing the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) meeting.
Iranian Ambassador to the United Nations Gholamali Khoshroo has slammed the U.S. government's recent attempts to intervene in the domestic affairs of the Islamic Republic. One of the largest demonstrations was at Tehran's Imam Khomeini Musalla Mosque, where thousands of protesters blasted the USA and chanted anti-U.S. slogans. Haley's statement did not mention how or if the U.S. contribution will be altered.Stephane Dujarric, a spokesman for Guterres, confirmed in a statement that the UN General Assembly on Sunday morning had approved cuts for the 2018-2019 period that would total about $286 million below the level for the last two years and touted support for a trial proposal to move to annual budgets.A United States official told CNN that the UN's administrative and budget committee "agreed on a range of issues related to the UN's regular budget, peacekeeping budget, oversight and management matters and reform initiatives."Among the points of agreement, the official said, included cuts with a "focus on bloated management and support functions and rationalizing services", and adjusting budget levels for Darfur and Haiti".
Commenting on the possibility of new USA sanctions on Iran, Ryabkov said such methods were "illegitimate".
For its part, Iran has accused the USA of "grotesque" meddling in social media to incite unrest - and thus tampering with Iranian affairs, according to a letter sent to the United Nations on Thursday.
Russian Federation requested the consultations and was set to call for a procedural vote to try to block an open meeting requested by the United States on the anti-government demonstrations, which President Donald Trump has openly supported. Some demonstrators openly chanted anti-government slogans at both the hard line clerics who run the country and at President Hassan Rouhani, a relative moderate who promised more political freedoms and economic improvements following sanctions relief after the 2015 nuclear deal.
"Human rights are not the gift of governments, they are the inalienable rights of the people themselves", Haley said.
"And people in Iran and throughout should be able to access those sites".
Pro-regime rallies were held around Tehran on Friday for the third day running with authorities seeking to put a lid on the violence.
"The President and I call on leaders of freedom-loving nations across the world to condemn Iran's unelected dictators and defend the Iranian people's unalienable right to chart their own future and determine their own destiny". "Unfortunately, many of our European partners, as well as the United Nations, have thus far failed to forcefully speak out on the growing crisis in Iran".
But Russia and Iran complained the U.S. was dragging a council focused on worldwide security into what they called a domestic matter. On the ground in Iran, however, the unrest appears to have ebbed on Friday. Trump expressed "such respect for the people of Iran as they try to take back their corrupt government" and pledged "great support from the United States".
Trump's administration has denied having any hand in the demonstrations, saying they arose completely spontaneously.
"We don't want to get involved in destabilizing Iran or any other country", he said.
"By your logic, we should have initiated a Security Council meeting after the well-known events in Ferguson", he said.
