The move is significant as it comes in the backdrop of party president Rahul Gandhi's bid to infuse changes in the party organization ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
As part of the process of restructuring of the organisational structure of the Congress, party president Rahul Gandhi on Friday appointed senior party leader Ashok Gehlot as the AICC general secretary in-charge for the organisaiton replacing Janardhan Dwivedi, one time confidant of Sonia Gandhi.
The appointments of Singh and Satav come as no surprise as both are known to be close to Rahul Gandhi and have always been members of his core team.
Mr. Dwivedi was also part of a four-member committee that was managing the day-to-day running of the party in the absence of Sonia Gandhi as the then Congress president, when she went overseas for treatment.
Rahul also appointed young leaders Rajeev Satav and Jitendra Singh as AICC in-charge of Gujarat and Odisha respectively and party leader from Gujarat Laljibhai Desai as the chief organiser of Seva Dal.
Prior to this, Ashok Gehlot was serving as general secretary in-charge for the party in Gujarat.
Next in line are going to be some of the state Congress chiefs. He had earlier also headed the party's communication wing for several years and has been part of several key decisions of the Congress. "Rahul Gandhi is not averse to senior leaders but it is clear that he will retain those who believed in him", remarked a senior Congress leader. Though the new working committee is expected to be put in place soon, there is also a view that the announcement could be delayed because of the coming Karnataka Assembly polls.
His predecessor and mother Sonia Gandhi said this month that the new Congress chief faces a tough task of striking a balance between the old guard and the young leaders.
The second order also said the party appreciates the hard work and contribution of Hariprasad, "who will be stepping down from his responsibility as AICC General Secretary in-charge, Odisha". A former bureaucrat, Raju has been Rahul Gandhi's chief ideologue for some years now, but he is not known to be in the same league as Patel.
