UMBC will still remember this tournament for a while following its stunning 20-point win over No. 1 overall Virginia in the first round. By effectively making each game shorter, Virginia increased its chances of beating better teams and decreased its odds of defeating worse ones. Not only did it represent their first ever NCAA tournament win, but it would mark the first time in men's hoops that a No. 16 toppled a No. 1.
Virginia: This isn't the first time Virginia has struggled as the No. 1 seed. "All three were big shots that were needed and helped us win the game".
"We don't even have a football team". You know, like UMBC was deserving of winning, just like when we lost, C.J. McCollum was pretty good and Lehigh deserved to win.
They deserved the moment. They proved they belonged at the tournament, and they proved it against one of the best teams in the country.

UMBC's scrappy defense forced 18 turnovers but managed just three points off those.
That team a few years ago, when a handful of players were either booted from the program or left of their own choosing, was dysfunctional from top to bottom. "If you play this game, and you step into the arena, this stuff can happen, and those who haven't been in the arena or in the competition, maybe they don't understand that, but when you're in the arena, stuff like this can happen, and all those who compete take that on, and so we'll accept it". That's nearly $30 million more than the weekend before, when the Retrievers beat Vermont to win conference and advance to the tournament. "We made history, I love my guys and that's all I can say". He told them he was going to get them to.500 that first year; they thought he was joking. There's a couple. They may sneak in. "I mean, I don't know why".
"But he's won the ACC against Duke and North Carolina, what four or five years?" That Georgetown team would lose its next game to Steph Curry and 10-seed Davidson.
Xavier Sneed isn't known as a clutch scorer, but he came through for the Wildcats when it mattered most against UMBC. "We want guys that want to be great from a basketball perspective and want to play after college". "What the hell? They're both gambling towns", said Edgar.
In the single elimination tournament, there's always going to be unusual results.

The talent is there, and it will be veteran talent, with multiple years in Bennett's demanding system - the Pack Line defense that led the nation in defensive efficiency yet again this year, and the Mover-Blocker motion offense that finished the season ranked 30th nationally in offensive efficiency.
But as Boeheim said, most fans only care about NCAA Tournament results.
