Around 400 to 500 students from several states, who have done apprenticeship with the Indian Railways and want permanent jobs now, came out and sat on railway tracks at about 6.45 am. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said in a tweet earlier that the Indian Railways has nearly completed the procedure of filling 90,000 vacancies in Group C and D and now it will soon start the process of filling 9500 posts in Railway Protection Force (RPF) out of which 50 per cent vacancies would be reserved for women. Union Minister said that students can apply for the job in the ongoing placement drive that will end on March 31, 2018. The Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) has invited application for massive number of vacancies recently and the application process is still on.
"We have already reserved 20% posts for "Course Completed Act Apprentices" who were engaged in Railway establishments under the Apprenticeship Act". After the recent farmers' protest, now railway job seekers have struck a protest. He said the apprentices protested with a "chakkajaam" on Central Railway section for almost four hours. Local commuters found it hard with the protests going.
Fadnavis said that the reservations for apprentices in the railways have been raised from 10 to 20 percent. "They were demanding jobs in railways, but railways have changed rules regarding recruitment of apprentices", he claimed.
Numerous commuters, who were stranded for hours in trains which bore the brunt of the agitation, later alighted from the coaches and were seen walking along the railway tracks. "Instead, they were lathi-charged in which the youth were injured", he said. Many become apprentices with the sole aim of joining the Railways and if in such a case they are not given that chance or opportunity it's bound to create tension.
