The rest of the field managed to miss Patrick as she came to rest on the grass.
Patrick's star rose at this race back in 2005 when, as a rookie, she became the first woman ever to lead laps at the famed Brickyard. Liz Power reached for the empty milk bottle, then pointed out to her husband that he'd sprayed milk all over one of the Indy 500 princesses.
This was not how she imagined the professional chapter of her notable racing career ending.
Sato, 41, won last year's Indy 500 in a narrow finish over Helio Castroneves, who was looking to win the famous race for the fourth time.
"Today was really disappointing for what he were hoping for", she said.
"I was definitely nervous", she said.
"It just swung around as soon as I recommitted back to the throttle - so I wasn't expecting it by any means". "'I think I am going to win this.' Unbelievable". The early headline news out of this year's race is that it will be the last for Danica Patrick who is retiring from auto racing following the event. I had a lot of good fortune here and did still have some this month.
Patrick was unable to dodge the bullet when she crashed coming out of Turn 2 and hit the inside retaining wall on Lap 68.
Starting on the outside of row one alongside Carpenter and team mate Simon Pagenaud, Power steered well clear of trouble through seven cautions and then pounced when he had his chance in the final laps.
"Please, Roger, let me go back", Castroneves said after stepping out of his vehicle. Hunter-Reay plied through tire smoke to barely avoid contact as Castroneves skidded hard backward into an interior SAFER Barrier.
"Man, I just can't believe it", said an emotional Power in Victory Lane. The restart came with eight laps to go and Power trailing Oriol Servia, Wilson and Harvey.
The two of them are among the most popular drivers in any style of racing, and now they're both retired. According to a report by USA Today, Power managed to get into the lead with only a few laps left in the race, claiming his first victory in the iconic race on Sunday. IndyCar races are also always available online at IndyCar Radio.
The win marked Power's 30th on the IndyCar circuit.
