In 2014, This American Life producer and journalist Sarah Koenig walked listeners through the 1999 murder of 18-year-old Hae Min Lee and the subsequent conviction of her ex-boyfriend Adnan Syed (who maintains his innocence) in the wildly popular podcast Serial.
The documentary will re-examine the events that led of to Lee's disappearance from "high school romance, forbidden love and cultural conflict, to the aftermath of her disappearance, the original police investigation and the present day, when Syed awaits a new trial".
By 2016, a Baltimore judge vacated the conviction and granted a new trial in light of new evidence challenging cell phone data that linked Syed to the crime, as well as testimony from an alibi witness.
As reported by the Baltimore Sun, the office of Attorney General Brian Frosh asked the Maryland Court of Appeals on Monday to overturn the lower-court ruling for the retrial.
Berg has been working on "The Case Against Adnan Syed" since 2015, per the release.
The Case Against Adnan Syed will air in the United Kingdom on Sky Atlantic and on HBO in the US. The show will also feature original music from singer-songwriter Nick Cave. With exclusive access to Adnan Syed, his family and his lawyers, director Amy Berg has been closely following their efforts to obtain justice, with the outcome still to be determined-and possibly shaped by the investigation pursued within the series itself. An official air date has not yet been announced.
