But Musk is confident build numbers for the Mode, 3 will hot Tesla's ambitious targets, so now he's set to to deliver temptring promises about the range-topping Model 3 - set to cost close to $80k. We thought we'd ask our Twitter followers that question this week.
It remains to be seen how many customers would want the more expensive Model 3 over the affordable vehicle they expected, or if the new Model 3 may cannibalize sales of the top of the line Model S. Still, they run about $30,000 to $45,000 less than a comparably equipped Model S.
The hefty price tag will also include all options, including wheels, paint, and a dual motor system.
Hollis Johnson/Business InsiderElon Musk said offering the $35,000 base model immediately would have damaged the company's financial health. When we report our results next week, it likely won't reflect Tesla's actual order bank for those reasons.
The company is planning a six-day stoppage of its Model 3 assembly line later this month, Reuters reported, in order to fix manufacturing issues and hit Musk's goal of 5,000 vehicles per week coming off the line. That means that if one motor fails, he explained, the other will "ensure you make it to your destination & don't get stuck on side of road in potentially unsafe conditions".
Unfortunately, in that variant the Model 3 definitely stops being affordable. Auto drives fine even if a motor breaks down. For the performance Model 3, Elon Musk says it will have a 0-60 miles per hour time of 3.5 seconds, 155 miles per hour top speed and a 310-mile range. He also noted that if one motor breaks, the other will drive the auto. But the high-end Tesla Model 3 will be "15% quicker [and] with better handling", he said.
It's not been revealed if the performance Model 3 will feature the same switchable "Ludicrous Mode" found on the older Model S and Model X electric vehicles, or will simply be in performance mode at all times. But perhaps the boldest claim of all is that the new Model 3 will "beat anything in its class on the track". Takes 0-60mph to 4.5 sec & top speed to 140 miles per hour.
Burning Cash The company burned through more than $1 billion of cash in the first quarter and may need to tap capital markets for more than $10 billion by 2020 to fund its car-making operations, new products and expected expansion into China, Goldman Sachs Group Inc. analysts said last week.
