The rise in suicide rates was highest in the central, northern region of the US, with North Dakota, for example, seeing a 57.6 percent increase since 1999. The state's suicide rate ranked 19th overall.

Among those who committed suicide and who had known mental health conditions, 67.2% had a history of treatment for mental health or substance abuse conditions, and 54 percent were in treatment at the time of their suicide. They found that relationship problems or loss (45.1% versus 39.6%), life stressors (50.5% versus 47.2%), and recent or impeding crises (32.9% versus 26%) were significantly more common among those without known mental health conditions than those with. "We need to learn more about why New Hampshire has been experiencing these higher rates", she said. "This study found that approximately half of suicide decedents in NVDRS did not have a known mental health condition, indicating that additional focus on non-mental health factors further upstream could provide important information for a public health approach".
