Former NBA star Dennis Rodman launched into an emotional monologue on CNN as President Donald Trump met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Singapore on Tuesday.
The two men will now discuss the potential denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and how to pursue peace between North and South Korea.
DPRK stands for North Korea's formal name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.
Critics of Trump, however, were quick to point out that the US president had given legitimacy to a murderous regime responsible for the starvation and death of tens of millions of people.
"I believe we're going to have a terrific success or a modified success", Trump said during a press conference last week with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
Trump can look back to President Richard Nixon's 1972 trip to China, when the ardent anti-communist defied conventional wisdom to meet Chairman Mao Zedong, irrevocably shifting the Cold War balance and setting China on a path to opening up. After a one-on-one meeting and a working lunch, Trump showed Kim the inside of his presidential auto.
"We sat down for lunch", Rodman said of a face-to-face meeting with Kim five years ago.
For Trump, achieving a momentous foreign policy success would cement his place in history. Some supporters have said he could win the Nobel Peace Prize.
North Korea, however, has shown little appetite for surrendering nuclear weapons it considers vital to the survival of Kim's dynastic rule.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un walks along the Jubillee bridge during a tour of some of the sights on June 11, 2018, in Singapore. Trump has also raised the possibility of further summits and an agreement ending the Korean War by replacing the armistice signed in 1953 with a peace treaty.
Just a few months ago, Kim was an global pariah accused of ordering the killing of his uncle, a half-brother and scores of officials suspected of disloyalty.
A successful summit could also herald momentous changes in the security landscape of northeast Asia, in a similar way to how the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 changed Europe.
It's so far unclear whether the USA and North Korea will release some kind of joint statement or agreement following the sit-down.
Many experts on North Korea remain sceptical Kim will ever completely abandon nuclear weapons, believing his engagement aims to get the United States to ease crippling sanctions.
Both leaders first emerged at 9:03 a.m. local time, walking along a bright red carpet from separate sides of a staging location at the Capella Hotel resort on Sentosa Island to shake hands with a backdrop of US and North Korean flags. Trump is expected to be joined by Trump was to be joined by Pompeo, chief of staff John Kelly, national security adviser John Bolton and U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Sung Kim, along with a few others, the AP reports.
Trump later dismissed the Libya model.
Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was deposed and killed by NATO-backed militants in 2011 after halting his nascent nuclear program and North Korea has long rejected any suggestion of a Libya model. Instead his spokeswoman, Sarah Sanders, spoke of "the President Trump model".
