The Justice Department announced indictments in special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election against 12 Russian nationals, accusing them of engaging in a "sustained effort" to hack Democrats' emails and computer networks.
To date, Mueller's probe has netted five guilty pleas, including from Trump's ex-national security adviser, Michael Flynn, along with almost 32 indictments, including the president's former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort.
Count Eleven charges conspiracy to commit an offense against the United States by attempting to hack into the computers of state boards of elections, secretaries of state, and U.S. companies that supplied software and other technology related to the administration of elections.
The announcement comes as Trump prepares to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin at a summit in Helsinki next week.
The indictment also does not allege that any vote tallies were altered by hacking.
Deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein has announced new indictments in the special counsel probe of Trump campaign ties to Russian Federation. That includes four former Trump campaign and White House aides, three of whom have pleaded guilty to different crimes and agreed to cooperate, as well as 13 Russians accused of participating in a hidden but powerful social media campaign to sway American public opinion in the 2016 election.
The Russia investigation has now led to charges against 32 people, including previous charges against 14 Russian nationals for their work on spreading Russian-based propaganda. It should all make for an interesting meeting of President Trump and Putin next week in Helskinki.
But Rosenstein said that responsibility for this prosecution - which is unlikely to go forward to a trial in court as Russian Federation is unlikely to extradite the suspects who've been charged - would pass from Mueller's office to the National Security division of the Justice Department.
"We do have a - a political problem where - you know in the United States we have this stupidity going on". But he added, "I don't think you'll have any 'Gee, I did it, I did it, you got me" confession.
