The PGA Tour has eliminated a FedEx Cup playoff event as part of a revamped, tighter schedule that will allow its season to end a week before the football season begins in the United States. Liberty National in Jersey City will host next year's event while TPC Boston in Norton will serve as host in 2020 and 2022.
The PGA and LPGA tours are teaming with a global professional services firm to initiate a first-of-its-kind contest, a season-long risk-reward competition that will pay a $1 million bonus to the men's and women's winners.
The PGA Tour announced its 2019 tournament schedule today, which includes the addition of two tournaments, changes in the timing and locations of others, and one less event in the FedExCup Playoffs.
The Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit features on the schedule for the first time from June 27-30, with the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities - now a Champions Tour event - a week later. "Memphis has been supporting PGA TOUR golf since 1958, and this elevated WGC platform will be monumental for our city".
The PGA TOUR announced its 2018-19 schedule on Tuesday, with the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational set to be contested from July 25-28, 2019, at TPC Southwind.
The Houston Open and Greenbrier Classic will move to the fall schedule in 2019 with new US Midwest events added.
The tour will feature 46 events over 41 weeks, down from 48 tournaments this year. "It's been our stated objective for several years to create better sequencing of our tournaments that golf fans around the world can engage in from start to finish". The Players Championship takes its new date in March and is followed by the Valspar Championship, giving Florida a swing of four consecutive events.
The RBC Canadian Open moves a week before the U.S. Open, held next year at Pebble Beach. It will be February 21-24, the same week as the World Golf Championships Mexico Championship.
While The Open, to be played at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland next year, becomes the last of the four majors, it will be a mad dash to the finish for PGA Tour players.
