Investigators say the assault happened as Rodolfo Rodriguez passed a woman as they walked on a sidewalk in the Willowbrook neighborhood.
He makes the trip about twice a year, and takes a walk through the neighborhood every day after lunch, Mendoza said.
The woman was then joined by four men, who joined in on the attack, KTLA, a Tribune Broadcasting station based in L.A., reports. Four men then joined in, kicking and cursing the pensioner.
The woman who took the video says he was struck with a piece of concrete several times in the head. The witness said for some reason that upset the woman and that's when it started.
She confirmed that the woman and her fellow attackers made racist comments to Rodriguez.
Rodriguez, who doesn't understand English, still has no idea why he was attacked, his grandson, Erik Mendoza, told KCBS.
Of the injuries and the gruesome nature of the beating, Los Angeles Sheriff's Deputy D'Angelo Robinson said: "We are concerned, especially with the type of crime they committed".
Authorities are hunting for several suspects after a 92-year-old grandfather was beaten with a brick on July 4 and told to "go back to your country, ' reports said". We can't these kind of people like that out in our streets'.
"But that's not true", he said, through tears.
The grandfather's name is Rodolfo Rodriguez, and the attack left him in bad shape - two broken ribs, a broken cheekbone, and lots of bruising. He spent five or six hours in the hospital, he said.
"I'm just overwhelmed how anybody can do this to a human being at all", Mendoza said.
Family members have set up a GoFundMe page to help raise funds for Rodriguez's treatment and recovery. "That's all our family wants, justice for our grandpa".
