It was Elliott's first career win, in his 99th Cup start, and 250th for Hendrick Motorsports. Jeff Gordon is the all-time leader with six in a row 1997-2000). This time, Elliott, who had several brushes with Hamlin in the first stage, quickly got past Hamlin and began putting pressure on Busch. GMS has been using several drivers in its No. 23 vehicle since Spencer Gallagher's suspension in May for failing a NASCAR drug test. Gallagher was reinstated last month, but the team has been using a variety of drivers, including Elliott's son, Chase Elliott, in the auto.
Elliott won the race's second stage and brought the crowd to its feet with a pass of Busch.
During that same pit-stop sequence, contender Denny Hamlin was penalised after running over an air-gun hose and dragging it out of his box, allowing tires to escape from his pit stall. He took the lead for his first time on lap 27 after challenging Kyle Busch to start the second stage of the event.
Truex held off Matt Kenseth on the final lap after Brad Keselowski and Ryan Blaney were forced to pit for gas as the race wound toward the checkered flag. He pulled out to a half-second lead while Martin Truex Jr. was fighting to get back to the front after restarting 12th.
"When this opportunity came up from Mike (Beam), I had to jump on it. Chase (Elliott) has ran a handful of races for the team so I figured I would give it a shot at Road America". All three of Truex's road course wins were won with strategy, including previous year at The Glen.
Chase Elliott said he and his dad have raced against each other in late models but not recently.

Truex was steady all day during the 90-lap race on the 2.45-mile, 7-turn circuit.
Hamlin traversed the 2.45-mile layout at 125.534 miles per hour Saturday to take the top spot in the No. 11 Toyota, just ahead of Busch.
AJ Allmendinger drove the No. 23 to a second-place finish Saturday in the Xfinity race at The Glen. Their times were disallowed and both Fords were sent to the rear of the 37-car field.
The Cup Series stars will do their best to put on a suitable encore on Sunday for the Go Bowling at The Glen.
Aside from the usual differences that road course races bring to the NASCAR schedule, the XFINITY Series race at Watkins Glen International was even more memorable than usual. Out of fuel after the finish, he was pushed to victory lane by the banged-up No. 48 Chevy of seven-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, a teammate and one of his staunchest supporters, as his father raced to join the celebration after spotting. Elliott hasn't made a NASCAR national series start since the 2012 Firecracker 400 at Daytona International Speedway.
