A woman and her partner in southern Germany were on Tuesday (Aug 7) sentenced to jail for selling her young son to paedophiles on the darknet.
The woman's 39-year-old male partner was handed a 12-year prison term followed by "preventive detention", which could delay his release on the grounds that he poses a danger to the public. As for Berrin, the judge described her as initially participating in the scheme in order to maintain her relationship with Christian but says she then became motivated by money; videos of the abuse were also sold on the darknet.
In one of the worst cases of child abuse in German history, a sentence of 12 years and 6 months was handed down to a 48-year-old woman, Berrin T and it is expected that her partner, Christian L, will receive a similar sentence. The abuse was filmed. Several other men have already been convicted in separate trials.
The court said the pair met at a food bank in Staufen, near Freiburg, in late 2014.
The stepfather has a previous conviction for paedophilia.
The couple also sexually abused a three-year-old girl in 2015.
On Monday, the same court sentenced a Spanish paedophile, Javier Gonzalez Diaz, to 10 years' prison for repeatedly sexually abusing the young boy after paying the parents.
The 33-year-old was also ordered to pay 18,000 euros ($20,800) to the young victim.
"A local youth welfare office took custody of the child in March 2017, when it became known that Christian L. - who is subject to a child contact ban - was living in the same house", Deutsche Welle reported.
Officials took the boy away from his mother in March past year following vague indications from police that he might be at risk, but a local court sent him back weeks later on condition that she not allow any contact between the child and her partner.
Police exposed the paedophile ring after they received an anonymous tip-off from a member of the public.
