"Idris could do it if he was in shape", Fuqua said. You need a guy with a physically strong presence. (Current star Daniel Craig is 50.) This January, Elba suggested the Bond role could one day be played by a woman. Despite Craig's return, however, speculation has been rampant about who will subsequently assume the 007 mantle, with fans diligently petitioning series producers to make a bold choice by selecting Idris Elba as the next incarnation of the iconic British spy. Elba addressed the rumors with humor tweeting back in December 2014. "Happy New Year people", Elba wrote at the time. The year prior, just ahead of when Sam Mendes released the 24th Bond film Spectre in November of 2015, Vulture cut together an insanely cool trailer that imagined Elba as a modern, take-no-prisoners Bond. It has now been reported that Luther and Star Trek: Beyond actor Idris Elba is in the running for the role.
According to Britain's Daily Star, Bond franchise producer Barbara Broccoli told The Equalizer 2 director Antoine Fuqua that there have been internal discussions about casting the first black actor to play 007. "Are we interested in having a Bond character other than being a male?" he said.
THR also reached out to Elba's rep, who did not answer, although "a knowledgeable source" for the publication revealed that no one in the actor's group of confidants knows anything about a Bond consideration (or offer) simmering away at Eon Productions, the Hollywood home of Agent Bond. "Could be a woman, could be a black woman, could be a white woman, but I think, that character, everybody would like to see it have - do something different with it, why not?"
