The Union of European Football Associations, UEFA, on Monday announced the names of the three nominees shortlisted for the 2017/18 UEFA Men's Player of the Year Awards. The UEFA Europa League Player of the Season will be announced the following day.
There is an argument to be made that Luka Modrić will go down as one of the most underrated footballers of this generation, but a place on the shortlist for the Player of the Year award could show that the Croatian is finally getting the recognition he deserves.
Cristiano Ronaldo may have ditched life at Real Madrid this summer in favour of a move to Juventus, but it is the Portugal international's performances in Spain previous year which see him once again on the final shortlist. He also finished top scorer in the competition for a sixth season running.
Luka Modric helped his nation reach the final of the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation where he won the Golden ball award. Modric won the Golden Ball as the World Cup's best player in Russian Federation. He although, won the FIFA Golden Ball of the tournament.
Other players who could consider themselves unfortunate not to have made the list include World Cup victor Kylian Mbappe and Manchester City's Kevin De Bruyne, with their lack of success in the Champions League again possibly a factor.
