Officials say they were alerted about the 35-year-old Ortiz after a fifth woman allegedly escaped from him and notified authorities.
Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar said during a news conference that the agent, identified as Juan David Ortiz, was arrested Saturday, according to multiple reports. They also declined to discuss the evidence or say how the women were killed.
Alaniz said that after the suspect picked up the fifth woman she quickly realised that she was in danger. Numerous workers are also low-income women of color.
A U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson confirmed Ortiz is a supervisory Border Patrol agent.
The Texas Rangers in collaboration with the Webb County Sheriff's Office are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found in the same vicinity where the body of another victim was found a week ago.
"We do consider this to be a serial killer".
All of these cases are related to the almost two week murder investigation of two other women who were found killed in a rural part of Webb County.
Alaniz said authorities plan to file four murder charges and one charge of aggravated kidnapping against Ortiz.
"Our sincerest condolences go out to the victims' family and friends", Meehan's statement said.
Ortiz was a 10-year veteran of the Border Patrol. "While it is CBP policy to not comment on the details of an ongoing investigation, criminal action by our employees is not, and will not be tolerated", the agency said. But the spokesperson referred all other questions to authorities in Webb County and the Texas Department of Public Safety. Cuellar said investigators believe heacted alone.
