Alvarez became the new unified middleweight champion Saturday evening before a sold-out crowd of 21,695 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. In fact, you can already place odds on who you think would win Alvarez-GGG 3.
But with scoring already criticised in their first bout before Alvarez's two failed doping tests in February, it is perhaps not surprising that once again controversy will remain attached to this rivalry, with talk of a rematch nearly certain. The AP scored it 114-114.
The two fighters switched roles from their first fight, with Triple G trying to counter Alvarez and the Mexican fighter coming forward much of the fight.
Ringside punch stats showed a close fight, though they favored Golovkin by a small margin.
Unfortunately tonight's rematch didn't deliver a decisive victor, but it did give fight fans one of the greatest boxing matches in the history of the sport.
Golovkin, the big puncher from Kazakhstan, has gone the distance twice in his last three fights, including the draw with Alvarez. While the fight itself was a masterpiece, the controversy surrounding the resulting split draw and puzzling 118-110 nod for Canelo left a dark cloud over an otherwise stellar showing from both men. He's a great fighter but in the end I got the victory. Great fight with two great champions!'
Golovkin was angered with the decision, the Kazakh storming out of the ring and refusing to do a post-bout interview. "No third fight for at least a year guys (long rest)".
The 12-round fight was full of hard blows, as expected, with both pugilists giving and receiving a generous amount of punches.
If the people want another round, I'll do it again.
I'm not going to say who won tonight, because the victory belongs to Canelo according to the judges. I thought it was a very good fight for the fans, and very exciting.
"I thought we did enough to win but I can't complain because Canelo fought a great fight and that's why we have the judges", Sanchez said after the fight. He'd whipped every other foe soundly but had yet to notch a signature win, the kind that would help cement his place among the division's all-time greats.
