News of Cavill being out of future Superman films came Wednesday morning, following a Hollywood Reporter story claiming after negotiations to have the actor reprise the role for a quick cameo on the upcoming superhero movie Shazam! With all of Warner Bros.'s DC movies now lined up, a Superman movie is still several years away, with the Supergirl movie being slated first.
Superman fans began posting all over social media after the first reports hit, decrying Warner Bros. for putting the Man of Steel back on the shelf.
Another factor that played into the deteriorating contract talks revolved around Warner Bros. decision to focus on its Supergirl movie for the time being. Other sources say Warner is looking to re-invent the DC installments and looking for new talent to go with this transformation.
"There's a recognition that some parts of the previous [Superman] movies didn't work", a studio insider said.
Man, do I love Henry Cavill!
Warner Bros. has no current plans for another "Superman" film starring Henry Cavill, a person familiar with the studio's plans said today.
Cavill recently spoke to Yahoo Movies UK about his dreams for a Man of Steel sequel, saying that he hoped the filmmakers would look to Brian Azzarello's For Tomorrow comic title for inspiration. He followed up the portrayal in Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017).
Another factor is apparently the studio's desire to reboot its entire DC Comics franchise, a theory borne by earlier reports that Ben Affleck won't be returning as Batman; the upcoming standalone Batman film will reportedly feature a younger actor playing the character in his earlier years.
The only member of DC's holy trinity that now seems to have no plans to leave is Gal Gadot as Diana Prince, which makes sense since she received critical acclaim for her performance in Wonder Woman (which also earned DC high praise and some serious box office returns).
