Helene is one of four tropical storms now forming in the Atlantic, with Hurricane Florence now hurtling through the USA central seaboard and killing at least three people. Nonetheless Helene is bringing with her very strong wind with gusts up to 120km/h, heavy rain and waves of between 6 and 8m high on some islands. It was moving to the west at 16 miles per hour with maximum sustained winds of 35 miles per hour. It will continue to move to the west and away from the V.I. during the overnight hours.
"Florence is a large hurricane", the 5 a.m. update on September 13 noted. "These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions". When Isaac reaches the west-central Caribbean Sea in a couple of days, the shear may relax somewhat and the global models suggest that there will be an increase in mid-level moisture.
We still have great uncertainty with our Hurricane Florence forecast. However, experts remained unsure midday Wednesday where the storm would make landfall in the Carolinas.
Joyce could become a tropical storm within the next day or so.
The National Hurricane Center said Wednesday that Subtropical Storm Joyce has formed in the north Atlantic, but is not now a threat to land.
Flooding farther inland also a concern as Florence meanders over NC, SC, northern GA for several days. Expect rain chances to be more typical at 40 percent Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
At this time no tropical storm/hurricane watches or warnings are in effect for Barbados.
The center of the Category 4 Hurricane, still swirling with top winds of 130 mph (215 kph), was about 530 miles (855 kilometers) southeast of Cape Fear, North Carolina, approaching the coast at 17 mph (28 kph).
We have seen this unfold before, when out of a very quiet hurricane season develops a rapidly intensifying hurricane that barrels toward the mid-Atlantic U.S. east coast. Tropical storm conditions are possible within the tropical storm watch area, also beginning late this morning.
