This is the first time that more than two people have achieved an EGOT in a single calendar year.
John Legend's just added some new hardware to his trophy case: an Emmy to accompany his Oscar (2015 Best Original Song "Glory" from Selma), Tony (producing Jitney, victor of 2017's Best Revival of a Play), and 10 Grammys (countless hit songs).
So, now that Legend, Rice and Lloyd Webber now EGOT status, does that mean they also get a diamond-encrusted chain? Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, producers of the OG JCS, also joined this group after Sunday's win.
The singer took home a Creative Arts Emmys award for Outstanding Variety Special (Live) for Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert on Sunday night, making him an EGOT victor!
With that win, Legend joins the elite company of 15 performers including collaborators Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, who also entered the prestigious EGOT club along with him for the same production.
Thus far, Legend has 10 Grammys to his name, an Oscar for Best Original Song for "Glory" (2015) and a co-producing Tony for Best Revival of a Play for the Broadway show "Jitney" (2017).
"Before tonight, only 12 people had won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony in competitive categories", Legend wrote on Instagram.
'So happy to be part of this team.
Just 14 other people have achieved EGOT status in history - Whoopi Goldberg, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice, Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks, Richard Rodgers, Helen Hayes, Rita Moreno, John Gielgud, Marvin Hamlisch, Jonathan Tunick, Mick Nichols, Scott Rudin and Robert Lopez. So honored they trusted me to play Jesus Christ.
