In the past returning opponents have been greeted by large crowds that turned into a slow hours-long procession towards the capital marked by clashes between police and supporters.
Ugandan journalists are braving harassment by security forces to send updates using their mobile phones of the arrival and consequent arrest of pop star-turned-MP Robert Ssentamu Kyagulanyi.
Ssentamu had sought treatment in the US for injuries allegedly sustained during state torture, which Uganda's government denies. Armoured personnel carriers and police vehicles lined the highway.
Bobi Wine, whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, had sought treatment in the USA for injuries allegedly sustained during torture by members of the presidential guard, which Uganda's government denies.
Some of the journalists arrested are; Kingdom TV's Siraje Kiberu, NTV's Joel Ssenyonyi, Eve Muganga attached to Daily Monitor and radio Sapiensia news reporter Charles Katabalwa, among others.
But a police official said he was being escorted to his home and was not under arrest.
Although a few people still went to the airport to receive them, the Police swiftly picked Kyagulanyi on arrival and whisked him away.
The 36-year-old Ssentamu says he is fighting for freedom from oppression and wants longtime President Yoweri Museveni, in power since 1986, to retire.
Social media users accused the government of taking draconian methods to keep citizens and opposition politicians at bay. "Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobo Wine) for easily cooperating with law enforcement officers at Entebbe airport who provided him with a chauffeur driven auto, escorts and traffic clearance to Magere", Opondo said.
Addressing Bobi Wine's arrest reports, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Martin Okoth Ochola said, "Nobody has arrested Bobi Wine, we are simply escorting him".
He said he was beaten with an iron bar in detention in northern Uganda. The legal basis for the escort was unclear, and Kyagulanyi wrote on his Twitter feed before flying home that he should be able to travel freely in his country.
They also said that all vehicles leaving Kampala on the road to Entebbe were checked at multiple roadblocks.
