Neither FEMA nor the inspector general's office of DHS immediately responded to Newsweek's inquiry about the possible misuse of government vehicles and taxpayer money.
During the question and answer session Long was asked if he thought all the laws and practices were followed.
Long, the DHS IG's office, and the White House all did not respond to Politico's requests for comment.
The news of an DHS IG investigation into Long comes as the country prepares for Hurricane Florence, a Category 2 hurricane that's expected to hit the Carolina coasts hard.
"I would never intentionally run a program incorrectly".
When FEMA administrator Brock Long started his job a year ago, he began to take routine trips home to North Carolina, using a government driver and vehicle to make the six-hour trek from Washington, D.C. An aide, who would stay in hotel room at taxpayer expense, would also accompany Long on these trips.
"Bottom line is if we made mistakes in the way the program was run then we will work with the OIG to get those corrected".
"Doing something unethical is not part of my DNA and it's not part of my track record in my whole entire career", said Long, who leads the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Politico first reported that the Department of Homeland Security's inspector general is probing Long's vehicle usage. "The secretary is confident in the leadership at FEMA and their proven disaster management ability". "He is known for his passion to help disaster survivors in their time of greatest need".
Other Trump Administration officials have been investigated for ethics issues related to travel. Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price was sacked past year after it was disclosed he took costly charter flights instead of commercial planes. Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin was sacked in March amid questionable travel charges and a growing rebellion in his agency about the privatization of medical care.
Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke is now under investigation for his role in a real estate deal in his hometown.
