For example, as fast-moving environmental, geopolitical or news events unfold on the ground, AWS Ground Station customers can downlink current data to any of the 12 AWS ground stations around the world.
Amazon said NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Stanley Black and Decker are current RoboMaker customers, using the system to build space rovers and drones for industrial inspection.
Using AWS Ground Station, the customers can save up to 80 per cent by paying for antenna access time on demand, and can rely on AWS Ground Station's global footprint of ground stations to downlink data when and where they need it.
Amazon Web Services and Lockheed Martin are integrating their respective ground station and antenna networks into a joint offering envisioned at helping users download data from more than one satellite at the same time.
"I wouldn't be surprised if in five years they have hundreds of ground stations around the world", Platzer said. "Today, you must either build your own ground stations and antennae or obtain long-term leases with ground station providers, often in multiple countries, to provide enough opportunities to contact satellites as they orbit the globe".

Ground stations are used by satellite operators to communicate with satellites using specialised antennas, computing network and other infrastructure.
AWS has helped Guardian get ahead of insurance industry disruption driven by new technology and changing customer expectations, and enabled us to innovate and provide services how, when and where our customers prefer, said Dean Del Vecchio, Executive Vice President, Chief Information Officer, and Head of Enterprise Shared Services at Guardian. "That also means if you want to take that data and use it, you need infrastructure to store, process and do analytics, which is all hard and expensive". With AWS Ground Station, AWS handles every aspect of the satellite data retrieval and processing operation for the company, greatly reducing the cost and complexity associated with it. And, Lockheed Martin Verge customers benefit from being able to upload satellite commands and data through AWS Ground Station and to quickly download large amounts of data over the high-speed AWS Ground Station network.
Lockheed Martin has developed the Verge Antennae network to support the capture and delivery of satellite data to AWS. At present, there are about 2,000 satellites orbiting the earth, which is expected to rise to about 16,000 in the next 10 years. The systems are now piloting in Denver area.
