In his announcement on Twitter, Sabathia said of the deal for the 2019 season: "This'll be it". It will be Sabathia's 10th season with the Yankees.
With two AL Cy Young awards and four top-three finishes in the last five years, Kluber is the best of the bunch and might cost NY the most in terms of assets. Gray, a right-hander who turns 29 this week, was unhappy with the harsh treatment he was given by demanding Yankees fans.
In 10 years with the Yankees, Sabathia is 129-80 with a 3.74 ERA and 1.264 WHIP in 1810.2 innings pitched. "I think the hunger and the effort, the passion's there, despite the frightful outcome that took place in the World Series this year".
Tanaka had a 3.75 ERA in the 2018 regular season.
"I think we'll just gravitate to anything that will make sense", Cashman said Monday at the start of the 2018 General Manager Meetings, via mlb.com.
Said Cashman: "He's been a great Yankee and he has some time on the clock still".
It was reported earlier in the week that the Yankees were interested in trading for former Cy Young victor Corey Kluber.
Cashman repeated he intends to trade pitcher Sonny Gray, just 15-16 since NY acquired him from Oakland in July 2017. A trade could be involved and there are certainly some free agents that fit as well. In each of their three losses to the Boston Red Sox in the ALDS, the Yankees' starter didn't pitch more than three innings.
It was an easy reunion for the Yankees and their big lefty, who made it clear on the eve of the team's Game 4 loss in the ALDS that NY was where he wanted to be.
