On Wednesday night, in Thousand Oaks, California, as gunman Ian Long killed 12 people at the Borderline Bar and Grill, Orfanos was not so fortunate.
Multiple people were killed in a mass shooting at a crowded bar in Thousand Oaks, California, late Wednesday, officials said. The U.S. Marine Corps released Long's service record, which said he served from 2008 to 2013, and his ranking was a corporal as a machine gunner, ABC News reported.
The gunman first shot a security guard standing outside, then went in and opened fire on staff members and patrons, the sheriff said. "Oh, son, I love you so much".
Witnesses said that the gunman, who was wearing a black trenchcoat, throw several smoke grenades inside the Borderline Bar and Grill before he started he shooting at around 11:20pm on Wednesday night.
Helus and a California Highway Patrol officer, who hasn't been publicly named, were on scene within minutes, and were the first responders to fearless their way into the bar, darkened by a smoke bomb set off by Long.
"He said Helus was on the phone with his wife when he got the report of the shooting and he told her, "'Hey, I have to go. "It's something that I wish I was OK to do, but unfortunately I can't, so that's why I'm making sure that he gets remembered", King said.
He was deployed to Afghanistan from November 16, 2010 to June 14, 2011, the Marine Corps said.
Dean told reporters Thursday, "I've learned it doesn't matter what community you're in...."
Long had been cleared by mental health experts after an incident in his home in April, sheriffs revealed on Thursday morning.
"I started hearing these big pops".
The gunman was later found dead at the scene.
The Los Angeles Times quoted a law enforcement official as saying at least 30 shots had been fired. A gunman shooting from the 32nd floor of a hotel and casino with high power weapons killed 58 people.
He said the shooter entered and turned to the door counter and coat check area before eventually working his way to the bar.
The names of the victims were not immediately made public and people gathered at a nearby teen center waiting to learn the fate of loved ones. "Fortunately it helped save a lot of lives that they fled the scene so rapidly", he said. "We go to the gym together, work out together".
As you can imagine, more people are reading The Jerusalem Post than ever before. "I just wanted to get down as soon as I heard the first shot go off".
He bolted toward an exit onto a smoking patio, filled with more people who hadn't heard the gunshots over the loud music "and I told them get over that fence and just run".
Curtis Kellogg, a friend who served with Long, said the last time he spoke with Long he was headed to Southern California.
He said both they both managed to escape. "He looked like he knew what he was doing". Helus was a 29 veteran of the force who had planned to retire in the next year.
Around midday, the body of the slain sheriff's officer was taken by motorcade from the hospital to the coroner's office.
