If you think I'm being a bit bombastic with my initial rhetoric over Diablo Immortal, the cinematic trailer above is now sitting at less than 5% likes at the time of this post going live. Fans expected a host of Diablo announcements and instead were met with the reveal of a mobile game.
A new Diablo game has been announced, developed by NetEase in partnership with Blizzard and it's exclusive to mobile devices. Skarn intends to gather the fragments of the corrupted Worldstone and use them to resurrect Diablo. "This game should be cancelled and Blizzard should be ashamed of it".
Blizzard says that the mobile game will have shared public zones as well as instanced dungeons that allow for a four-player experience. The game will take place somewhere in the 20-year span between Diablo 2 and Diablo 3, and will revisit some of those games' locations.
Blizzard is the home to some of the biggest game franchises of all time: Warcraft, Diablo, Starcraft, and more recently Overwatch. If you want an idea of how fans of the franchise are taking this just go and check out the ratio of likes to dislikes on the gameplay trailer and the announcement trailer. You can even join them to take on risky dungeons. Blizzard says that we will see stories surrounding characters like: Deckard Cain, Malthael, and even the backstory behind the Demon Hunters. Blizzard is calling this the first mobile massively multiplayer online action role-playing game (MMOARPG) meaning you'll be able to get together in groups to tackle the game.
"Diablo Immortal takes the series' dark, gothic fantasy world of Sanctuary and inimitable Diablo gameplay, and puts it in your pocket", said J. Allen Brack, president of Blizzard Entertainment in a statement. "Younger folks now, many of them, mobile is their primary gaming device". Just as he's about be killed, he's saved by another of Diablo III's classes, the Wizard.
