Murray, Tagovailoa and Ohio State's Dwayne Haskins are the three finalists for the Heisman Trophy. Murray took home the Davey O'Brien Award, which goes to the best quarterback.
Tagovailoa, a 2017 Saint Louis School graduate, beat out Murray, Washington State quarterback Gardner Minshew II, West Virginia quarterback Will Grier and Kentucky linebacker Josh Allen for the Camp Award. The Oklahoma quarterback topped Tagovailoa for the Davey O'Brien Award given to the nation's top quarterback.
"Kyler Murray has accomplished more in one season and had more impact on the Sooners' tradition in one season than any other player in our history", said legendary former OU coach Barry Switzer. He's on pace to best Baker Mayfield's all-time single-season passing efficiency mark, as well has his record yards per attempt benchmark. Tagovailoa has thrown for 3,353 yards, 37 touchdowns to four interceptions and has completed almost 68 percent of his passes. The 5-foot-9 signal-caller led the Sooners to a College Football Playoff berth while throwing for 4,053 yards and 40 touchdowns and rushing for 892 yards with 11 scores.
Winning both the Walter Camp and Maxwell awards is an encouraging sign for Tagovailoa. The last Walter Camp victor to miss out on the Heisman was Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o.
He also won AP National Player of the Year earlier in the day, and is one of the favorites to take home the Heisman Trophy on Saturday. Jackson won the Heisman that season. Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray was named the AP player of the year Wednesday, and was chosen as the Davey O'Brien Award victor as the nation's top quarterback today. "I think that everybody should look at the whole body of work when they're deciding who the best player is".
