"It is unjust for Congress to budget a living wage for ourselves, yet rely on unpaid interns & underpaid overworked staff" to help Congressmen and women she wrote.
"This week I went to dive spot in DC for some late night food". A former congressional intern himself, Vera explained how the system of unpaid jobs in the Capitol has everything to do with keeping working-class students and people from low-income families out of the halls of power.
Ocasio-Cortez in a December 2 tweet claimed a $21 trillion mistake could have paid for about 66 percent of the cost of a Medicare-for-all bill.
After hearing this, Ocasio-Cortez declared that she would be providing a "living wage" to all her interns; paying them 15 dollars an hour. "How can you legislate a better life for working people if you've never been a working person?"
"She can not do either because she doesn't understand how the world works", she explained, "how people make money, how money is created, and the creation of money is actually a positive sum effort where more people thrive when more people make money!" And even though Democrats are more vocal about a higher federal minimum wage, they fall behind their Republican colleagues in paying their own interns any amount at all.
House interns fare worse: Only 8 percent of those who work for Republicans and 3.6 percent who work for Democrats get paid.
According Pay Our Interns, a nonprofit group, 51 percent of Senate Republicans pay their interns, as opposed to 31 percent of Senate Democrats. An appropriations measure signed by President Donald Trump in September included an annual allowance of $20,000 per House member for internships.
Another recent budgetary concern of Ocasio-Cortez drew sharp criticism.
They noted that the $21 trillion of Pentagon accounting errors were over 17 years, while her estimate of spending for the healthcare program was over 10 years - a mistake of simple math.
