For students and desk workers all over the world, the Microsoft Office app icons are, ahem, iconic.
Company Microsoft for the first time in five years, the upgraded app icons of its office Suite.
The changes hint at some of the coming changes to the Microsoft Office productivity suite.
The new Office icon designs are meant to provide a simpler and more modern look that spans across platforms and devices. Part of those updates involve gradually implementing Microsoft's Fluent Design language throughout the operating system.
The release of the new icons is just a pretext for Microsoft to explain the whole process behind it.
To us, the new icons look a bit like plastic buttons. "While each icon has a unique and identifiable symbol, there are connections within each app's symbol and the collective suite".
Microsoft has also changed the letter to symbol ratio to emphasize the symbol instead of the letter in each office 365 app icon. Microsoft has been working hard over the past few years to bring Office to a broader number of platforms like iOS and Android, with a single core code base that allows them to make changes across each of these platforms. Not only this but Outlook Mobile is also getting a design change but the information has not been shared yet. It is the best way to do it, app by app and not a complete overhaul in one go, which would require a long time but this way it makes more sense plus the updates won't be too long.
Access, Visio, Publisher, and Project aren't featured among the new icons, because although Microsoft continues to distribute them, the applications are all functionally abandonware, with no new feature work being performed.
